Version 4 is now available. Industry Player is fantastic as a macro-economic simulator with a strong, knowledgable player base and an excellent trial basis. The economy is a fine balance between player and server controls, and does not fall into the trap of using the simple Keynesian economic model of supply and demand. Instead market forces are generated by a series of extremely complicated formulas that, luckily, result in very easy to understand datum for the player.

Gameplay is as simple or complex as the player desires. Each Player creates a Holding company, which may then purchase up to five Licenses (businesses) over the course of their allotted turns, and may upgrade them to become more profitable. There are several industry sectors to choose from (eg. Textiles), and within each sector there are several licenses to choose from (eg. Dyes are a license of the Textile sector), and each license qualifies as either a Raw, Intermediate, or Consumer product.

Each Product both creates and affects the lateral and horizontal markets, as well as market index for related products. For instance, Dyes require X quantity of Raw and Intermediate materials (each of which are their own buyable licenses, some of which are in different sectors). However, Dyes are then used as a material to create other Intermediate and Consumer products. In other words, the integration of these licenses is so incredibly in depth as to allow the serious micro-manager the ability to number crunch to their hearts content, but are dynamic enough to simulate the true volatility of a real, self-correcting economy.

The free version of the software is fun, but for true competitive play one will need the Gold version, which is, admittedly, inexpensive as fair as games go (about $20 USD) and includes several features that take the game to an entirely new and exciting level. Additionally, payment is easily handled through any number of methods (even PayPal).

For those worried about their ability to make their mark on the scores, the game is split into 10 levels (1 lowest, 10 highest), each of which include their own dynamic scoreboard that allows new players just as likely a chance to show everyone who's the real Industry Leader.

Because of the extremely dynamic nature of the game, one needn't worry that one particular sector is better or worse than the others on a regular basis. However, the fact that Textiles might be better than Electronics one day and worse the next is not something randomly determined by the server, but rather the interaction of player licenses providing supplies to one another. For instance, if there is a flood of cotton fabric and polyester licenses in the Textiles market, the cost to create various clothing licenses will be considerably cheaper, and thus, more profitable. High profitability will encourage others to play this license until the market becomes saturated enough to lower prices to the point where another license seems more attractive.

So, if you are a student trying to understand how the macro-economic system works, a business entrepreneur looking to gain insight as to what lies ahead, or even just a gamer looking for a macro business sim, this is absolutely the game for you.

Gameplay is a combination of turn-based and real-time play, where players are allotted 120 turns worth of production per level, but the "ticks" in virtual customer purchases happen in real time for everyone.

Now, for all the praise, there are a few points the game falls short of excelling at. Chief amongst them is a very demanding minimum play per cycle. Currently it is at 60 hours, after which you are penalized a turn every 2 hours. Considering the target demographic for this game (adults), it leaves very little leeway for those of us who unexpectedly must go an entire weekend without playing the game. This has already caused me to use up one of my 3 free resets (resets thereafter cost gameplay credits).

Secondly, the ability to perform a hostile takeover of your competition needs some work. Not only is the act of attempting a takeover very unintuitive and quirky, but the act of having a license taken over by your competition will completely wipe out your chances of winning. However, this aspect may soon be corrected. Either that or walk into this game never letting your credit rating drop below "A-".

Lastly, the game lacks in the "Tycoon" aspect of an individual business. Your interaction with your employees is limited to a slider-bar of how much they are paid. Your quality control and insurance are similarly notched. Other than that, the only thing distinguishing one license from another is the materials they require in order to be produced, and the profit that can be achieved from them. However, I can also see where this would slow gameplay down interminably.

While these three problems may seem a harsh criticism, it is a mark of how fine a game and how admirable I find the formulas behind it that, despite these problems, I give it a very well deserved 4/5 and a hearty recommendation to anyone looking for a macro-economic multi-business multi-player simulator. ---The Libra

A game you cabn really get involved in. been playing for years and its never the same twice. Plus the community involvement in forums and chat rooms where players are listened to for their suggestions, feedback and improvements make this game unique. Its not just another Tycoon game. You have to adapt strategies every level which makes it a challenge to beat previous scores.

From Version 1.0 to Version 3.64 (364 releases) in under three years, can only be described as meteoric developmental progress - new material and novel options in every release - and there are more on the way! V4.0 is currently being BETA tested now! I have played IP from the first week it was released and am still playing it. Corporate Trusts, (groups of players in Clans), wage corporate war as they compete in a dynamic market place, manufacturing and selling their products in an ever-changing economy. Mastering the highest financial returns requires some smart manoeuvres. Hostile take-over bids by competitor companies are a constant threat if you take your eye off your credit rating. Liquidations - necessary to remain competitive - must be carefully considered too, to avoid bankrupting your empire. As CEO, you will experience hiking interest rates, strike action, insurance costs, dynamic taxation rates, natural disasters (floods, fires and typhoons) and slumps in demand, which can kill your portfolio's performance, unless you have your finger firmly on the market pulse. Fresh, crisp graphics and plenty to think about make this business simulation a unique experience and one you will come back to again and again - very addictive and mega fun. An avid fan ... Dinger Bell.

The amazing development of this game can only be described as a fanatical devotion to a true simulation of the large economic parameters faced by CEOs. Pick an economic sector, expand your product lines within it- or outside of it. Control your labor, quality, stock and insurance costs- set your prices, undercut your competitors, or expand your company to produce quantities they cant match! Expansion in this game is key, and without properly managing your debt loads and even credit rating (yes, that's right- your credit rating is even analysed!) you may run into a wall, or you may even face the disgrace of bankruptcy. If you want some run of the mill "place your factory here" game, this isn't your game- if you want a challenging and addictive business simulation, you've found your match.
