Not bad... not great July 10, 2000

I played Ishar 3 with high expectations. Ishar 2 was, afterall, one of my favorite RPGs of all time. But, whereas Ishar 2 always provided new challenges and gave you a feeling of accomplishment each time you played, Ishar 3 seems to be a largely uninhabited world. You'll spend a lot of time traipsing about each of the seven dimensions and not doing a heck of a lot. Still, the game has its moments, particularly in the city, which is actually more expansive than Zach's Isle was in the previous game (oddly enough it's supposed to be the same city, despite the name change and the entirely different layout.) There are some interesting puzzles in the dungeons, though they can be a little too obscure at times, and some may find the clock puzzle a little tedious. The plot isn't brilliant (the evil Shandar has returned in the form of a dragon), but it's pretty much what we've all come to expect from RPGs. One revolutionary aspect of gameplay is the ability to hire characters from taverns. This was a feature in previous games in the series, and I'm glad they kept it in tact. Your party votes on whether they'll let someone join based on his/her personality. But don't expect everyone to get along just because they're a team. Your wizard may despise your warrior and refuse to heal him after combat! Ultimately, if you liked Ishar 2, get this game. You won't like it as much, but the gameplay is similar enough so you'll feel at home. If you never had the chance to play Ishar 2, you should try this one anyway, since part 2 seems to be no longer available (and I doubt this will be around much longer either!)
