5 out of 5 stars Excellent PDA   May 8, 2002
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

When my Palm 3XE was on its death bed I began searching for a PDA. I ended up replacing it with the Sony N610C.pThe Good:pExcellent display-High resolution; I appreciate this more than I thought I would. Go for color-its worth it.pLong battery life.pJog dial-really nice.pCover is fine-I have had no problems with this.pAsthetics-very nice looking PDA.pPrice-you can get a great deal on one now that the 615 is out.pThe Bad:pIts heavy.pSony provided brochures not very helpful - although I had a good experience with Sony customer service. They had my info from my old palm into my CLIE in 15 minutes.pOverall this is an excellent PDA. As long as the weight doesn't bother you I would highly recommend this PDA.

4 out of 5 stars A worthy upgrade   January 29, 2002

When I saw a demo unit of this beauty sold for only $250 at CompUSA, I could not help me to get one to upgrade my aging Palm IIIx. Overall, it is a worthy ugrade. Here are what I like and not:pWhat I like: br1) best screen I've ever seen, bright and Hi-Res, it is great to shot off your photos;br2) Jog-dial is easy for one hand operation;br3) long battery life;br4) very stylish;br5) Memory stick - what! Did say Memory stick is good? Yeah, you bet. Comparing with CF, it is small. Size does matters. I guess it is why Palm uses SD or MMC, but they are more expensive than MS. Again, MS is not Sony-only any more. I use Lexar and I see SanDisk out there too; br6) 8MB is enough if you know how to use MS with MsMount, and you will never short of storage. I recommend not-so-big 32MB since this one can not be used as a MP3 player.pWhat I don't like: br1) clip-on cover sucks, fall off too often, why Sony can not give us one come with Sony T-series? br2) lack of better font support to take full advantage of the great hi-res screen;br3) lack of lock mechanism for MemoryStick, I often accidently knock it out, although no harm to Palm OS at all.br4) a bit heavier than what I like, a form factor like T615 will be perfect (T615 is expensive and its buttons are too bad). In fact size and price are my main objections to Pocket PC devices.br5) lack of accessaries, I lost my stylus, Guess what? I can not find a replacement form local stores. Since Sony is relatively a newcomer comparing with Palm and HandSpring, it surely will be better over time;br6) don't bother with palm Desktop software come with Sony, it is slow and has problems with Avantgo, and can not sync with Netscape Mail. Download version 4.0.1 from palm instead.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent product   January 29, 2002
The bought the Sony Clie after having problems with the Compaq iPAQ. The Sony has worked great. So far the 8 megs of memory have been plenty, even though I have added a number of programs. Syncing up with the computer works well and it is very easy to move programs from computer to the Clie. I have not have any problems with the docking station, it seems much more stable than the one for the iPAQ. The battery life is excellent, easily going over one day. The display is the high point, both in bright and dim light the display is very easy to read. It is amazing that it can be so bright and yet still have good battery life. The jog dial on the side is also a very useful feature for scrolling through large lists or documents. I highly recommend the Sony Clie 610 for those looking both for functionality and fun.

3 out of 5 stars A pretty good PDA   January 12, 2002

I purchased this as a replacement for my Handspring Visor Deluxe, and on the whole, I would say it has been a positive experience.pWhat I like:p1. The sharp color screen.br2. The smaller, thinner size.br3. Memory stick capability.br4. It is faster.pWhat I don't like: p1. Placement of the power button directly below the up/down button.br2. Buttons are too small and not as ergonomically friendly as those on the visor.br3. The sync software is terrible. It comes with Intellisync Lite, which is quite inferior to the Chapura PocketMirror that comes with the Visor.br4. I wish they could get together with Handspring and license the slot. I never used my old slot, but you never know when it might be useful.pI wouldn't have bought this if I had to pay full price for this. However, I couldn't pass up the beautiful shape and sharp color screen for the low 3rd party price I got.

5 out of 5 stars The best in Palm OS   January 11, 2002

Currently this PDA is the best of Palm OS. The only thing it does not have is a MP3 player for which you should get the Clie 760 model of Sony (and pay a lot more also!)brThe plusses:br1 Color screen! and high resolution too!!br2 Jog dial (I love it when going through addresses or calendar).br3 Long battery life (About 3 weeks if sparingly used, about 10 days normally).br4 Fits right into your 'palm' - neither too big nor too small.br5 Memory expansion option available via MemoryStick.pMinusses:br1 No bundled MemoryStick or case.br2 Just a bit pricey.
