Product Description Whirlwind Over Vietnam puts you in control of America's first major use of helicopters in a support role. The UH-1B "Huey" helicopter became a symbol of US involvement in Vietnam, but it also had strategic abilities that didn't exist before. The Marines first landed there on March 8th, 1965 with new weapons and the Hueys as transportation and fire support in landing zones. Become a pilot or gunner, choose your aircrew and decide the fate of Indochina. Autopilot mode allows to change view and watch the course of the game Engine-powered cut-scenes Real Vietnam locations

Huey Hogs from Hell June 6, 2008 I just bought this title despite less than stellar reviews from every major player out there in gaming. I knew what to expect going into this but how many other titles offer you the chance to fly a fully modeled Huey Hog with damage profiles and also provides the ability to switch combat stations and of all things centers on Vietnam? No one has ever modeled a B or C model gunship even in Flight Simulator.br /br /The concept is brilliant, the weapons platforms authentic, uniforms, colors, and B /D model Hueys are amazingly rendered. Flight dynamics are not going to be dead on. The point is to make if flyable for a gamer. There are enough principles of flight in this game to give you a headache though. Helicopters by their very nature dont want to fly, unlike an airplane you literally have to fly them all the time because everything is working against itself. Nevermind navigation for this era when GPS was not around and pilots used distance and time, land marks, line of sight and beacons to fly. You want realism fly the real deal otherwise be glad they even included such things as Dynamic Rollover or Blade Stall.br /br /The developers actually included a mission editor so that you could create your own scenarios but they provide no instruction on this and unless you look in the install folder you wont catch this gem. The file extensions from a Western perspective are nonstandard. Most developers here dont write .tex files. Skinning and mod'ing are therefore not easy to develop which is probably why no Western sites are devoted to it. This isnt surprising given the game is Russian developed. European standards are different duh. That said, Im working hard on try to revive this title and possible breath some support into it. Once Im finished modeling a C gunship for FS2002 in GMAX.br /br /My gripe? I'd like to say the developers that brought IL2 and Silent Hunter III must have really shifted their resources to their other delayed and anticipated title T34 vs Tiger, a WW2 tank sim because the team that did those amazing combat sims stopped short on this one. Not from a graphics perspective although to me the AI on the ground could be better rendered. As a release it is really thin in many ways.br /br /br /In real life I'm the program manager for the restoration of a real Huey C model gunship that flew in Vietnam. To me, a game like this is pure fun and it was important to approach it from that perspective. If you do the same it will serve it's purpose.
This Game Is Absolutely Lousy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! June 9, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This game is a rip off. It is so bad it is unplayable. One star was too high a rating for it. I unfortunately bought it before there was a review on it anywhere, so there was no warning. If you don't believe me take a look at Gamespots review. I can't even believe Amazon would sell such a piece of trash.
WOV May 27, 2007 The graphics are awesome but the helicopter flight model needs some work. Each axis steps in about 10% increments rather than linearly smooth like a real chopper. Also, the game does not support TrackIr but does have mouse look (it is just cumbersome having to re-center the view every time you look away). The realism is outstanding except for a few bugs in the program like AI helicopters sometimes sinking into the ground instead of lifting-off,etc. The soldiers are excellent for a flight sim as is the movement of the AI gunners and co-pilot. br /If you know how to convert your music files to WMA, you can add them to the games music menu. I added tunes from The Doors, Hendrix, and more from that era which gives the game more of that Vietnam movie feel.br /Finally, the game is probably not optimized for multi-core CPU systems. I have a dual-core (2x 1.6Ghz) and the performance slowed down a lot when I flew through smoke and dust. Other than that it played fine.br /br /With a patch to address these issues, this game could easily be a 5 Star helicopter flight sim. If you really like chopper games, it is still worth getting because its only around $30 new and there's only a few helicopter flight sims that are better.
What were they thinking May 19, 2007 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Let me start by saying I really enjoyed IL-2 and thought what better people to make a Vietnam Helo game! I was stoked at the thought of flying hueys! I bought a Trackir in hopes that this game would support it like thier other titles but NOOOO!! I played Veitnam Med-Evac Search and Rescue and thought its flight model was good and it was very challenging but out dated. I played WoV about 1 hour and never played again! I can only hope that they come out with a patch to fix this lame game. You might as well watch a movie about flying a helicopter cause this is NOT GOOD! I ended up buying microsoft FSX and got my helo fix that way but it lacks the missions of Veitnam Med-Evac. Why couldn't they make a Veitnam helo game based on dustoff pilots? Having to land in on going battles and grab your wounded at get out would be much better than fly with 9 more choppers and be told exactly what to do! I thought gaming was moving away from the scripted game play but I guess I was wrong.
