Impressions for the first 5 hours of play: We just finished Gothic 1 for the third or forth time right before starting this one. Interesting comparison between a decade old (almost) game and current stuff.br /br /First, the fact that we could get thru Gothic at all without getting bored is a testament to how terrific that game was (and is).br /br /FG loaded on my system without a hitch. I loaded both patches too. No problems running it though it does seem to stutter a bit which surprises me. Sort of a surprise given I have dual nvidea 8800's and 4 g of ram. Other techie oddity is how long it takes to load a game.br /br /I appreciate the fact that the text is actually readable for me. We play on a 65" home theater screen and tiny fonts are a problem. In fact, everything is clear as a bell.br /br /At the outset the quests have been cute/interesting. It seems that the writing is a bit more tongue in cheek in this outing than in the earlier ones. I am impressed with the renderings of landscape and buildings, clearer somehow than G3.br /br /No bugs yet and no crashes.br /br /Seems pretty enjoyable, particularly as a filler till G4 comes along.br /br /Impressions for the middle 1/3 of the game:br /br /Very odd. Odd that you could be directed to kill Anton when he is still part of a quest. Or that you could be directed to take his widow "back to Anton"br /br /I am finding an amazing level of sloppiness in this game, that and a linearity that was not present in any of the other Gothics.br /br /The thing that may be a killer though, is the way that the Hero has been made into a self-righteous prick.br /br /That is absolutely a non-starter in the world a RPG. A Hero that you can't root for.br /br /Anybody else feel the same?br /br /Impressions at the end of the game: The latest bug is that saves seem to be corrupted after I fight in the cave against the Summoner and his henchmen. Quicksaves and regular saves, in the cave or outside, result in a crash to the desktop when I try to lead them. Effectively, it seems, one must do the entire endgame in one pass. br /br /"That isn't a bug, it's a feature!!":Dbr /br /It does not really matter, which is really a sad statement. I noticed, as I spoke with Immanuel and Gorn that the developers didn't even bother to make sure that the person being talked to was synced with the action. As Immanuel "talked" his image was active engaged in conversation with an NPC. At this stage it seemed to me that 50% or more of the dialog was not voiced. Also, the correspondence between the spoken words and the written finally broke down almost completely.br /br /I am not sure what to make of this. I sort of got over the bugs in the earlier part of the game and tried to enjoy it. I used the console to raise my stamina to 500 so that I could actually engage in combat (I suggest that everyone do that, BTW). I got over the ludicrous, stilted, third world sounding interchanges as well as the general prickiness of the Hero. The game moved along and, with the console, I could "fix" the occasional problem. Was not bad (not great, I hasten to add) for a while. Now this. br /br /Just because you call it a game does not make it one. br /br /This was a real disappointment to me. br /br /All I can say is shame on everyone who had anything to do with this. Particularly shame on Dreamcatcher (the US distributor). I would be VERY careful about further entries in this franchise, I fear that they might be little more than money grubbing pieces of unfinished software.br /

1 out of 5 stars Save your money   December 14, 2008

This game is horrible. The Gothic series is the greatest RPG ever, Gothic3 had serious performance problems though. This one is all the performance problems plus some, horrible questing, the dialogue makes no sense whatsoever.br /br /The web site talks about new technology to make the game better. There is absolutely no evidence of that anywhere. Save often, save often, save often.br /br /Ever read a manual for a new piece of equipment and it was obviously translated from some other language by a non native English speaker? That is exactly what the dialog is like.br /br /There is some new content to the game, looks like someone started to do something interesting, just never completed it. There could not have been any quality control at all, you can't even complete a main game quest without a patch.br /br /Very big disappointment, save your money. Start another WoW toon, get Witcher or play Gothic 1 and 2 again. Lets hope the Gothic4 developers get that one right and give us something that's worthy of our hard earned dollars and gaming time.br /

4 out of 5 stars Immersive, ambient, beautiful graphics, nice sound if patched!   December 3, 2008

I'm playing this on a high end loaded computer. Also, installed the latest patch from Jowood publishers. Yes, this game has some flaws, clipping, and bugs. The manual is very generic and not so helpful, either.br /br /BUT, there is fun to be had here and the scenery is gorgeous on my computer and large CRT graphics monitor. Play on other individual's computers might not render the same results or circumstances. I haven't experienced any crashes. I can only rate this game from my experience and entertainment. The Gothic series has always been known for some bugs and crashes. The developers/publishers usually patch them quite promptly and such is the case with this one. Yes, I wish things were a bit more polished than they are but for $20 or under this title is well worth the money.br /br /I'd say much of the dialogue is better than most rpg's and has more intesity, a higher sense of urgency, emphasis, and appropriate enunciation. Some of the rpg choices like leveling up and magic, potions, armor equipping seem to be automated and the bottom selection bar makes using items quite handy.br /br /The dinosaurs and monsters thus far are quite colorful and noisy. The cows I've encountered were detailed, moved very smoothly and realistically, and mooed with nice and natural gusto. br /br /I coud go on in listing all the bugs but to me the positives outweigh the negatives. The man with no name moves gracefully and weilds a weapon with might. br /br /If you are an action and single character rpg fan then this title deserves a try. Be sure you have medium to high-end computer specs because this software evidently likes certain set-ups more than others.br /Many problems with games are a result of low computer specs, outdated and missing drivers, and non-optimized computers. br /br /Also, always download the latest PATCHES. It's too bad they have to exist but hey, there are so many different variables and variegated components in each computer. br /This fits in very well as a summary of all the other Gothic titles and that with better graphics, sound, movement, and controls. Enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars It is not just horrible...   November 24, 2008

I am a huge Gothic series fan, and I was waiting for this add-on since JoWood announced it. Gothic 3 was rathe bad, but this add-on not just bad, it is an insult to the gaming community.br /br /Plot: Written by complete idiots. Ridiculously bad.br /br /Gameplay: The same as in G3 - no change in combat system, no nothing.br /br /Bugs: All possible and impossible bugs are present - from difficulty with installation, insyability, and memory problems leading to crashes every 10 minutes or so, to flying trees, absense of water in rivers, birds flying 2x2 formations, cows running like horses and going through walls (I guess they are indian super-cows or something), missing dialogue options, missing NPCs, and so on and on and on...br /br /The only value this game has is a comedy one - you will have hours of fun (interrupted by constant crashes) reading ridiculous dialogues and doing idiotic quests.br /If you really value money at least a little bit, stay away from this piece of trash and buy something else instead.
